Past review of my Kenwood DDX8120 shows that I was MISERABLE with that hunkajunk that took a dirt nap after less than three years. Swore off Kenwood for life. Replaced the burned out technotrash 8120 with an Alpine INA-W910 and the heartache began anew. Horrible Alpine navi. Nanny warnings before every attempt to change something while driving. Push emergency brake, engage brake, release emergency brake, release brake. Sheer Alpine torture. Then, after skipping a couple generations of Kenwood navis, I finally relented and looked into the 9990HD. Glad I did.
GUI is exponentially faster. Iconography is intuitive and slick. The Garmin is...well, a Garmin. So, here's a breakdown of the pros and cons as I see them after having played with this unit a bit.
Pros:
Not a Bose POS
Screamingly fast GUI
A2DP blu-tooth streaming so I can hardwire my iTouch for optimal sound for my audio library and use blu-tooth to stream my beloved WEEI sports... Read more

DNX9980HD Review, June 10, 2012 By Jean Boland (Kent, WA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Kenwood Excelon DNX9990HD Touchscreen In-Dash Double-DIN Navigation DVD Receiver (Electronics) I am pleased with this product except for the GPS. It seems that the GPS component was an after thought. It was not engineered to update maps simply through a USB as most Garmin products. Garmin advised that maps are only available once per year with no lifetime maps option. Garmin updates its maps quarterly for other products but not this one. The map update instructions are inadequate. They tell you to update with a SD card, however they do not specify what size. I tried several sizes and only the 4 gigabyte card could be read. An SD card was not provided with the unit. The seller/installer of my product was not aware of the update process. He kept saying that Garmin would provide the SD card with the map update, which they clearly do not do. The download option is the only way mentioned by Garmin. My unit advised that new maps were available and I started the process of attempting to update the maps. On the Garmin website, I found the instructions and attempted to... Read more
